From viewpoints of EHV and UHV transmission planning, it is very important to calculate the potential rise of a transmission tower subject to lightning stroke. A new method is proposed to calculate the surge impedance of a transmission tower taking into account the tower structure which has been neglected so far. The results calculated by the proposed method agree well with those measured by the direct method. The fact that the propagation velocity of the current wave on the tower is approximately 70 to 90 percent light velocity has also been confirmed experimentally by the proposed method.
