To preserve the sealing capability of seals following thermovacuum drying (TVD) of transformers and to eliminate the laborious operation of replacing them, the Leningrad Branch of the Scientific Research Institute of the Rubber Industry (NIIRP) and the All-Union Institute of Transformer Construction (VIT) developed a transformer sealing method. The essence of this method consists in the following: during manufacture the rubber seals are not after-vulcanized; after-vulcanization is carried out during TVD of the transformers. The non-after-vulcanized seals are installed in the separable joints of the transformers and compressed by (3-5)%, ensuring tight sealing of the transformers during TVD. Following drying, the seals, having obtained optimal properties in the course of the process, are deformed by another 20-40%.
