In many applications of water jet cutting it is necessary to turn the pre-nozzle flow by 90 degree and exit it through a nozzle within a short distance. An application of this type is borehole mining of coal and uranium. A sharp flow turn preceding the nozzle leads to flow disturbances harmful to jet performance. The inlet to the nozzle must be properly designed to minimize these disturbances. This paper presents the results of a program to design and test a flow turn/nozzle device at near production flow conditions. The flow turn/nozzle device performance is found to approach the performance of the straight section/nozzle device and to be superior to the performance of the unmodified elbow/nozzle device. Design criteria for other flow conditions are presented.
