Polyurethanes are probably the best materials for the corrosion protection of steels in terms of cost-per-year-protected. As per ASTM, polyurethane coatings are generally classified into 5 types, of which all are briefly described. Zinc-filled polyurethane coatings have become important. However, these must be protected by a barrier coat, such as mica-filled iron oxide bound in polyurethane. Such coatings have been employed in chemical plants in India, some exposed to a marine atmosphere in addition to corrosive chemical fumes, with satisfactory results.
