Comparison of the relative advantages and disadvantages of software, combined software and hardware, and hardware-only methods of implementing polynomial error detection codes provides a basis for selecting the most efficient technique for a specific environment. Two software table methods are described, for which high efficiency is claimed. If each character of a message must be processed by the software for any reason, the additional overhead of the software polynomial processing will most likely have a negligible effect on total processing time. The combined hardware and software method may be as good as the table methods, if the user has a capability of producing the hardware himself and interfacing it with a particular computer. The average user, however, does not have this capability and should use a software method where possible. The hardware-only method should be used in high load systems which do not require software processing of individual characters of messages.
