Ni2+ distribution in BaLiF3 crystals prepared by the zone-melting technique

BaLiF3:Ni2+ was synthesized under HF atmosphere with 1, 3 and 5 mol% of nickel concentration in the melt. Ni0 formation was observed in synthesized ingots even for processes under HF flow. Thermal analysis measurements showed the simultaneous occurrence of oxidation and reduction of nickel during the melt process. The distribution coefficient of Ni2+ in the BaLiF3 matrix was evaluated as 0.1 in the zone-melting experiments.
