Fast Packet Switching (FPS) enables voice, video, image and data services to be supported on a single broadband network. FPS networks can be built from highly parallel multistage switches interconnected by high speed optical fibres thus providing high throughputs with low delays. The network protocols blend the characteristics of datagram, virtual-circuit and circuit-switched networks. FPS networks can be implemented as an overlay to the narrowband Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) to provide new services and network growth. This paper considers future services and network requirements, the structure of fast packet switched networks and integrated network evolution.
