This article deals with the development fundamentals behind today's modern locomotives and describes the demands made on high-performance locomotives to meet the requirements of the railways in the transition to the 21st century. The author discusses the introduction of three-phase asynchronous drive on the German Federal Railways, the advantages of newly introduced universal-type locomotives and high-speed passenger train cab-driven units, and also advances in the mechanical aspect of locomotive design and in electrodynamic braking. Examples of the use of three-phase drive on railroads other than the German Federal Railways are also cited.
