Dioxins and furans are a series of chlorinated organic compounds of varying toxicity which can be emitted as a product of combustion. Their analysis requires the ability to recognise both the molecular weight and particular isomer formed. A combination of gas chromatography to separate the isomers followed by high resolution mass spectrometry to identify the compounds by their molecular weights is employed.
