Study of the stability of feed pump rotors showed that the values of the damping factor of vibrations in slotted seals of the rotor have to be ascertained more accurately; with this object in mind the authors investigated the dependence of these factors on the pressure gradient when the rotor vibrated parallel to the axis of the housing and in the case of angular vibrations phi . The damping forces and damping factors are calculated either by the Euler equations supplemented by frictional losses (along the slot) of the liquid moving in the axial direction, or by the Reynolds equations. The experimental and calculated damping factors of the slotted seal are presented. Results show that in the slotted seal with vibrations of the rotor parallel to the axis of the housing, the damping force increases substantially with increasing pressure gradient and then C//d equals 275-2660 N multiplied by (times) sec/m. To increase the damping forces in seals carrying out vibrations, the pressure gradient has to be reduced.
