Though an office may have a standard for piping materials, each project should be reviewed individually. Each system should be looked at for the particular piping material to be used versus the system it is used for. There are two approaches, used in specifications, to indicate the piping material on a project. One is a 'material approach'. This is where the material is used as the heading, listing the different systems that this type of pipe can be used for. The second approach is just the opposite; listing the systems on the project and specifying which piping material is applicable for each individual system. A brief review is given on materials and systems on a typical project: cast iron piping; copper piping; the type of solder; steel piping; plastic piping; and glass piping.
