Test data and practical experience with manufacturing that shows swelling tapes and swelling yarns improve cable performance, lower the total cost of cable manufacturing and have a profound effect on the cost of installing and maintaining optical cables are presented. Everyone from the cable manufacturer to the installer to the splicer to the maintenance crews will benefit form the lower costs of dry water-blocked cables, which is a true `win-win' situation.
