The determination of the appropriate level of silicone addition for tissue substrates during the tissue making process is discussed. Silicone is a generic team referring to a class of materials that possess the advantages of both silicon-based and organic chemistry. The gross amount of the treatment add-on can be determined through process control equipment or by simply performing a mass-balance calculation. The test method would require fast turnaround time, reasonable sample preparation costs, and reasonable capital investment in analytical equipment. Different test methods including gravimetry, solvent extraction and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) are evaluated. XRF testing has a quick turnaround with no cost to prepare the sample and medium capital costs.
