Explicit method for calculating FRP volume of RC beam strengthened with externally bonded FRP

The checking formulae presented by ACI 440F and Chinese Specification CECS 146:2003 are not convenient for calculating fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) volume for given target capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with externally bonded FRP. A non-dimensional equation of bearing-capacity increment for rectangular beam is deduced by defining steel-reinforcement characteristic value and FRP-reinforcement characteristic value, and then an explicit formula for FRP volume calculation is presented. Furthermore, the explicit formula is applied to beams with T-shaped section or even general section by using an additional section shape factor.
