The full benefits of a modern smart grid infrastructure are realized when the grid automation system and the process automation system collaborate. Energy-intensive manufacturing plants can take advantage of the fluctuations in electricity prices, including both the price to purchase electricity from the grid and the price to sell electricity back to the grid, which may have a significant economic advantage. A smart grid opens new possibilities for the application of automation technology. The flexibility provided by integrated process automation and energy management, helps manufacturers to save energy by using electricity more efficiently, and to procure it under the best possible financial terms.
