Biometrics technology is finding wider applications as it finds support of the US government. The government is planning to support biometrics and conduct trials to include information such as finger prints, iris patterns, and a facial image within recognition maps in its proposed ID cards. The government support for the technology has encouraged business firms to develop innovative ways to integrate biometrics into existing applications. Some of the industries that have made the first use of the technology include information technology (IT), banking, and finance. The wireless industry is also beginning to adopt biometrics to develop the latest mobile phones. The technology has enabled mobile phones to store photos, email, and personal contact information. It could also be integrated into ATMs and within point of sale systems, enabling all transactions to be authorized using a fingerprint.
