The UK's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) arrested a British consultant and his Romanian wife in connection to the sale of two ex-Royal Navy Type 22 frigates to the Romanian Navy. The search operations were made of premises in central London and the two were later released after questioning, and no charges have yet been laid. The corruption allegations centre around the reported payment of a secret commission of around GBP1 million to the consultant and his wife and a further commission of GBP6 million to as yet unidentified Romanian political sources. The arrests were made in relation to suspicious of corruption surrounding the GBP 116 million contract to reactive and upgrade the former HMS Coventry and HMS London, signed as a government-to-government agreement between the UK and Romania in 2004.
