The use of heavy-duty chains in the automotive industry allows to improve the traction characteristics of driven tires on varying terrain. Such chain types are subject of tribological influence and must have a maximum life span with minimum wear. The basic mechanism of this complex wear type was examined and analyzed at the Chair of Conveying Technology and Design Methods at the University of Leoben in a research project over several years. This research was the basis for the development of a special test procedure for heavy-duty chains. With the help of this test procedure it was possible to examine the influence of the material, the different hardening process, the chain topology and the traction under defined conditions as well as to determine their interactions.
