Battery energy consumption has always been a hot topic in energy-aware wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that consist of sensor nodes operating on non-renewable batteries. However, most studies only focus on a single WSN node or a single path; thus, they cannot capture the effects of network-related factors such as traffic from different paths being merged. In this study, we develop an analytical model to calculate the battery energy consumption of a WSN considering path correlation. The effects of traffic arriving from other paths have been considered in our model to provide an understanding of network-related properties and congestion performance. Simulations results validate our analytical model and provide useful insights into the construction of real WSNs. Copyright © 2015 American Scientific Publishers..
