Blockchain proposes many innovative technologies used for building a credible transaction mechanism in open environment, which attracts widespread attention of various industries. From the point of view of application, the application framework of the blockchain technology is firstly summarized. Then, the application problems and application methods of the blockchain technology in the fields including artificial intelligence, internet of things, 5th-generation (5G) network, supply chain, image and multimedia, education and healthcare are discussed. With application as the background, the performance evaluation parameters of the blockchain technology including basic performance specifications and characteristic specifications are proposed systematically, which provides the basis for the analysis and evaluation of newly designed blockchain. Finally, the research trends of the blockchain technology in service, scalability, avoiding false and invalid transactions, performance analysis, security and privacy protection are analyzed, which is expected to provide useful ideas and thoughts for the application research in this field. © 2020, Science Press.
