Surface trimming is widely used in surface modeling; texture mapping and medical simulation. In existing methods of surface trimming; cutting lines are usually picked manually or assumed to be known or determined by computing the intersection between two surfaces. This paper presents a new method of region search for trimming triangulated surfaces. In the method; the boundary of a region is first searched and then the geometric elements of a mesh is labeled with internal or external marks; finally; a 3D patch is obtained by re-triangulating the internal region. The proposed algorithm is suitable for interactive operations of surface trimming. Experimental results show that the algorithm is robust and efficient. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2006;
