The U.S. is still struggling to counter the spread of violent extremism five years after 9/11 attacks and the start of the 'war on terror'. Senior U.S. officials believe that there is a tendency of increase in number of terrorist with the killing of each terrorist. A study conducted by the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism concluded that the estimated number of Al Qaeda members has steadily risen from 20,000 in 2001 to about 50,000 currently. The group has moved from an organization that once conducted planning and financing for terror attacks to one that principally is involved in providing inspiration and propaganda for the jihadist cause. There has been a growing realization among the senior officers that the path to victory over terrorism is not through killing or capturing individual terrorists, but through undermining their support and discrediting their ideology.
