The design and development team of NATO's Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) program has revised several earlier planning assumptions and performance requirements to meet a budget cap of EUR 3.3 billion. The design and development phase for AGS is expected to begin in 2007. Cost control has been a major concern for the long running AGS project and that the latest changes mean that the plan is affordable, achievable and still meets all customer needs. A revision to the original demand for 24-hour surveillance over a target area for 30 days has allowed the deletion of Global Hawk from the plan. The proposed AGS air fleet stands at four Airbus A321s equipped with Transatlantic Cooperative AGS Radar (TCAR) and four Global Hawks equipped with Radar Technology Insertion Program (RTIP). The subsequent design and development phase will be a EUR 1 billion effort of over about 30 months.
