This paper covers a general knowledge about boron minerals and their physical & chemical properties, world reserves, production statistics, mining, mineral processing and production methods of borates and its derived compounds. The paper also underlines the importance of borates for Turkish economy. In recent years, Eti Mines Inc. which is the largest borate producer of the world has had huge investments on mining, mineral and chemical processing for its vast borate mines spread into western part of the country, namely Kirka, Emet, Bigadic and Kestelek. According to the authorities of Eti Mines Inc. very new borate reserves were also discovered nearby its current mines and new mineral and chemical processing plants were also commissioned in Kirka and in its export harbour, Bandirma, in order to produce good quality boron products which have been largely demanded by several industries, such as glass, ceramics, agriculture, etc. It has been also reported that a national boron research institute has been established in Ankara in order to widen the consumption areas of the boron products as well as the scientific studies for the development of new boron products.
