The formation of coatings based on alloys of the Fe–Al system by deposition of aluminium and steel is investigated. A calculation–experimental method for calculating the conditions of argon-shielded arc surfacing with a consumable electrode and an aluminium filler wire is proposed. The method can be used for controlling the chemical composition and properties of the deposited layers. The experimental results are used to determine the effect of the deposition conditions on the chemical composition of the weld metal and the service properties of deposited layers. © 2015, © 2015 Taylor & Francis.
