Ian Ling, the new president of the Society of Operations Engineers, believes that to encourage young people into engineering profession, engineers must share their experience, tell people what they do and be active in the community to present engineering as a rewarding and satisfying career. He concedes that engineering have been the backbone of society for the centuries and the means by which the world has progressed. Engineering is a team effort, less likely to be credited to charismatic individuals. He concerns that without recognition, engineering itself becomes invisible and society forgets its dependence on engineers. Modern apprenticeships has been emerging again and universities are providing a wider range of engineering courses leading to degrees. But students have to be made aware of what engineering is and what it has to offer, in terms of excitement, job satisfaction, and the breadth and depth of the discipline, otherwise they will not choose to pursue these courses.
