The shape evolution of the vacuum switching arc at short-gap was continuously photographed with a high-speed digital camera (CMOS), and its diffusion characteristics in the interval of combustion were analyzed by image processing. An algorithm to evaluate the diffusive motion of the vacuum switching arc was developed on the basis of the binary background subtraction and digital image processing technology. The results show that the newly-developed technique is capable of characterizing the diffusion area of the moving arc of the vacuum switch, and calculating the instantaneous diffusion rate in the combustion. Besides, the possible impacts of the arc diffusion behavior on development of the intelligent vacuum circuit breaker with high voltage, and large capacity were also tentatively discussed.
