Characteristic analysis of a synchronous variable-pitch vertical axis wind turbine based on a double-multiple streamtube model

This paper aims at validating the formerly used performance analysis of a synchronous variable-pitch vertical axis wind turbine based on the blade element theory. The hypotheses and domain of the blade element theory and double-multiple streamtube model were expatiated after studying these theories. The width characteristics of streamtubes in a double-multiple streamtube model were analyzed and proven to be the reason of divergent phenomena in the calculations. An improvement of these width characteristics was made; afterwards, the divergent phenomena decreased distinctly and the computing speed became faster. Based on the improved model, a synchronous variable-pitch wind turbine was analyzed and proven to be nearly optimal with maximum performance at a tip speed ratio of 0.6, a wind-driven power-generation test was done, by the comparison between the theoretical results and the test data, the feasibility of improvement method was verified.
