The drinking water industry has become increasingly interested in membrane filtration to replace granular media filtration. The advantages of membrane filtration have been increasingly considered for both retrofit of existing water treatment plants and outfitting of new ones. The membrane filtration process is less susceptible to particle breakthrough and improper chemical pre-treatment for filtrate quality performance and offers a more reliable barrier than granular media filtration. The positive water quality provided by membrane filtration can also provide a positive water quantity barrier and can be sensitive to the character and concentration of suspended and natural organic matter loading. Membrane filtration chemical pretreatment provides increased membrane productivity that yields a lower life-cycle membrane filtration system cost. The selection and deployment of the most effective treatment solution should be based on an objective evaluation of the project-specific quantitatively measurable benefits and life-cycle costs;
