Flexible screw conveyors are suitable for conveying difficult-to-handle bulk materials at any angle, moving over or under obstructions and through small holes in walls or ceilings. These conveyors have the advantage of simple construction, low space requirements, reliability of operation, and favorable economics. They are appropriate for use with cohesive materials, ultra-fine particles, fragile or friable materials, materials that fluidize, and blended products of disparate particle sizes and bulk properties. An engineer must consider the material's physical properties and flow characteristics when designing a flexible screw conveyor, and also take into consideration as to how these characteristics will be affected by actual conditions in the plant and the design of the equipment. Flexible screw conveyors also are appropriate for abrasive materials, mainly due to ease of maintenance resulting from a design that utilizes no internal bearings and only one moving component that contacts material.
