Preparation of polystyrene brushes on a silicon surface via atom transfer radical polymerization

An (11-(2-bromo-2-methyl) propionyloxy) undecyltrichlorosilane monolayer was grafted onto a silicon wafer. Polystyrene brushes were obtained by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization on the modified silicon wafer. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and contact angle measurements showed that polystyrene brushes were successfully obtained. Furthermore, GPC test showed that the number average molecular weights of the polystyrene increased linearly with monomer conversion, indicating that the graft polymerization proceeded in a living fashion.
