This work, now published as a final report of research carried out between 2006 and 2011 provides pathways on the concept of Information Literacy and its development. It is argued in favor of studying the technical dimensions, aesthetic, ethic and policy of the Information Literacy. The survey results show that philosophy, sociology and education are areas of knowledge that have a close relationship with Information Literacy. The study also suggests that the creation of theoretical principles for this subject area must be based on the social construction of reality, social representation, among others. Regarding the methodology of the research, this was based on a qualitative approach and application of a structured interview with open questions for thirteen (13) directors of libraries at Institutions of Higher Education (IES) of the State of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
