To support life cycle carbon footprint assessment and low carbon optimization of design scheme in product design phase, a low carbon design method based on design features was studied. The feature expression model of product design scheme was constructed to represent the design information related to carbon footprint of product life cycle. By analyzing the correlation between product design features and life cycle carbon footprint, a product carbon footprint evaluation method based on design features was proposed. A low-carbon optimization model based on difference algorithm is established to optimize the design features with the goal of minimizing the carbon footprint of the life cycle and obtain the design scheme with the optimal low carbon performance. A refrigerator is taken as the research object to carry out the low carbon design and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2023 Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering.
