The fuzzy-PID combined governing speed controller of the marine diesel engine was designed. According to the different engine operation conditions, the fuzzy controller and PID controller were switched by a switch unit. In order to achieve smoothly switching, a switching controller was designed. Through download of its code to the dSPACE/MicroAutoBox controller, the switching functions of the controller under the start and the load abrupt change conditions were verified using the rapid control prototyping. Compared with the rapid control prototyping of conventional PID controller, the fuzzy-PID controller can achieve better control effect at both dynamic or steady state characteristics.
