Based on the basic principle of electrical capacitance sensing, a digitalized electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) system is designed. The effect of the structure parameters of array electrode on the symmetrical sensitivity distribution is also analyzed by finite element method. Through optimum design and simulation experiment, the homogeneity of the sensing field distribution is improved. A 12-electrode digital ECT system including core of digital signal processor (DSP) and the field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices is developed. Meanwhile, a new reconstruction algorithm, which divides the process of reconstruction into two steps, i.e. pre-iteration method off-line and one step image on-line is presented. It can improve both the high data acquisition speed and the high image resolution.
