It is predominantly important for design of warship topside protective structures to shed light on the characteristics of damage loads in the case of the explosion of anti-warship missile warheads in air. Fragmentized warheads are mostly adopted by the present anti-warship missiles. Studies on damage loads of fragmentation warheads exploded in air is systematically reviewed in the present article, with respect to the mechanisms of shell fracture and fragment formation, fragment velocity, fragment size/mass distributions, space distribution of fragments, and the influence of shells on the intensity of shock wave. Current status of studies on experimental and numerical techniques has been analyzed. Development trend of the study in this field is discussed and some problems for further investigations are put forward. © 2016, Editorial Office of Ship Building of China. All right reserved.
