Numerical analysis of bearing capacity behavior of bucket foundation subjected to torsion shear loading based on elasto-plastic FEM

Based on three-dimensional nonlinear numerical analysis, failure envelopes of bucket foundation subjected to torsion shear loading in soft clay was investigated. The general-purpose finite element software ABAQUS was utilized and numerical computations were conducted. Through the numerical analyses, failure mechanisms and envelopes for combined loading (V-T, H-T, V-H-T)of bucket foundation was reviewed. Furthermore, the mathematical expression of failure envelope was deduced. According to those analyses and derivation, it was obtained that: (1) Under torsion shear loading, the circular plastic failure area was outward-extending, which was as center of foundation as rotating center. The closer the distance to foundation was, the more notable plastic failure was. (2) The bearing capacity of bucket foundation in V-T, H-T load spaces was increasing with the increase of the L/D. (3) The mathematical expression of failure envelope was deduced, which was used to approximate express the features of bearing capacity. And it was also used to evaluate the stability of bucket foundation.
