Migration of small He-vacancy clusters

Recent studies of irradiated steels have indicated that small vacancy clusters are formed in greater numbers than previously thought during cascades. When combined with helium, clusters of this type are commonly considered immobile. Here, a simple model of small cluster mobility is derived and their lifetimes and diffusion coefficients are estimated. It is shown that these clusters have a significant mobility and that this could couple the arrival rates of helium atoms and vacancies to growing bubbles. Such coupling would markedly shorten bubble incubation times. © 2008 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and W. S. Maney & Son Ltd.
