±800 kV smoothing reactors are necessary in ±800 kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission. Before manufacturing the reactor, the lightning overvoltage withstand ability of the reactor should be evaluated to ensure that the voltage between each pair of coils is less than the critical value. The voltage distribution in such a reactor was analyzed with PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the external coils' over-voltage between the two first coils is larger than between the internal coils with higher voltages during cut-off lightning than with the full lightning.
