A new cyclic model of a four-reservoir isothermal chemical pump with irreversible mass transfer; mass leakage and internal dissipation is put forward in this paper. The maximum COP and the corresponding rate of energy pumping of the four-reservoir chemical pump are obtained. The influences of these irreversibilities and the ratios of chemical potentials of the reservoirs on the optimal performance of the chemical pump are revealed. © Ambient Press Limited 2008;
