This article covers recent developments in the depth-imaging technology known as reverse time migration (RTM). RTM will be compared to Kirchhoff, beam, and other wave-equation migration techniques. Special emphasis will be placed on the practical application of this technology to reduce exploration cycle time and risk. Recent trends such as TTI anisotropy and wide-azimuth applications will also be discussed. © 2009 Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
