This paper describes the unique features of the 3D virtual world created by CA-based Linden Labs, called Second Life. It is a user-defined world where people can interact, play, build 3D objects, do business, and communicate. The paper discusses how second life can open new opportunities for collaborations across disciplines and geographies that would not otherwise occur.
