A kind of waterborne epoxy resin was synthesized from polyfunctional group novolac epoxy resin (F-51) and diethanolamine, then neutralized by acetic acid. The modified resin remains more epoxy groups, so it can be used as coating and composite matrix with amine curing a-gents. The modified resin can disperse equably in water under room temperature which can be maintained steady over one year. Moreover, the resin has good emulsification to other epoxy resins. Blending it with moderate E-51, a waterborne emulsion system with excellent stability was produced by phase inversion technique. The cured film shows good performance, equivalent water absorption to solvent epoxy resin.
