The influence of magnetic fields on the properties of optically generated space-charge waves in photosensitive GaAs:Cr and InP:Fe is reviewed. A strong impact of the direction of the magnetic field with respect to the externally applied electric field and the wave vector of the space-charge wave is uncovered. We explain our results either by the action of the Lorentz force or specific physical mechanisms related to the materials under study including the magneto-resistance and the negative differential conductivity. Furthermore, in some cases, inhomogeneities of the samples' material parameters have to be taken into account. Copyright © 2009 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
