Performance analysis and improvement of PM for 2D-DOA estimation of two l-shape arrays

The propagator method (PM) algorithm is well known for its smaller computational loads and can satisfy the estimation resolution when applied to 2D direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for two L-shape arrays. As for the unsymmetrical two L-shape arrays, since one of the three linear arrays has fewer elements than the other two, it will lead to more serious estimation error. This paper analyses the performance, discusses the statistical error of PM, and then introduces an improved PM in the case of one signal source. Theoretical analysis and simulation results both show that this improved PM algorithm can have higher estimation resolution and lower variance, and what is more, it can be performed real-time and used for all kinds of two L-shape arrays, without extra computational loads.
