The views of author on the immature state of the information technology (IT) industry, are discussed. He thinks that software professionals should upgrade an install software at night instead of disturbing regular operations during day. He says that most of the factors contributing to the immature state of the industry are within control, although reversing their effects might require a variety tough measures from professional associations, including IEEE and ACM. He thinks that the industry is nascent and it has time to develop professional practices. The profession is strongly influenced by marketing which seemed to assure new, innovative, and cost-effective solutions for complex IT problems. He says that the products software professional design are complex and touch every aspect of life, including real-time, online applications. Another major problem facing the profession is a lack of rigorous education and training which, if not addressed, will be the biggest hurdle to the growth of the profession.
