The all-fiber network

The nature and characteristics of all-fiber networks in the telecommunication industry, are discussed. The ultimate in all-optical network may be all fiber networks, in which the functions performed by big hunks of hardware are in the future performed under the glass of the fiber itself. The researchers used microstructured fiber filled the holes with germanium, a second gas to see whether they could build a semiconductor device inside these holes interact with the optical signals beaming alongside it. These in fiber semiconductors could be used to generate modulate and detect photonic signals. The researchers said that the in-fiber semiconductor devices will be a major step towards all-fiber optoelectronics.
