A numerical approach for modeling acoustic wave propagation with absorbing boundary conditions based on the finite element method is investigated. The technique solves a weak formulation of the wave equation, which is discretized using a third-order finite method. The absorbing boundary conditions are derived based on the wavefield decomposition. They are coupled in the weak formulation. Moreover, the computational scheme and the stability condition are given. Numerical experiments both for homogeneous and complex models demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
