Effect of hot plastic deformation and heat treatment on microstructure and properties of TC11 titanium alloy

Effect of heat treatment after compression at 1000°C on microstructure and tensile properties of TC11 titanium alloy was investigated by means of optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy and tensile tests. Microstructure observation of the compressed and water-quenched samples indicates that the elongated equiaxed grains tend to recover to equiaxed shape, and the tendency of the elongated grains to recover to equiaxed shape is more obviously and the volume fraction of equiaxed alpha phase increases after water quenching plus aging and duplex annealing, and meanwhile acicular alpha phases are precipitated from beta phases (β). The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the specimens treated by water quenching plus aging increase to 1300MPa and to 1152MPa, respectively. That is to say, σband σ0.2increase by 14.8% and 16.8% compared with that the water-quenched alloy, respectively. The deformed and water-quenched TC11 titanium alloy after duplex annealing exhibits excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 1176MPa and elongation of 15.95%.
