Photonic crystal fiber, a kind of microstructure or holey optical fibers, was a hot topic in the field of novel optical fibers in last twenty years. Because of its unique structure and optical properties, photonic crystal fiber attracted extensive attention for the application in fields outside optical communication. The fiber types, waveguide mechanism, preparation techniques, fiber characteristics and research progress were summarized. The applications of photonic crystal fiber in supercontinuum light source, fiber lasers, fiber sensors, etc., were introduced.
